BTS Suga, Commemorating Ryuichi Sakamoto
World-renowned Japanese music maestro Ryuichi Sakamoto has passed away, and tributes from musicians in South Korea continue to pour in.
On the 1st, when the news of Ryuichi Sakamoto's death was reported through local media, BTS member Suga posted a message on Weverse, a community service, saying, "I wish you a peaceful journey, teacher. R.I.P Ryuichi Sakamoto."
The connection between the two was well-known. The late Sakamoto mentioned meeting BTS member Suga in the final episode of his essay 'How Many Full Moons Will I See in the Future?', which was serialized in the literary magazine Shincho. According to the essay, the two met in Tokyo, Japan, at the end of September last year and exchanged musical perspectives that transcended nationality, age, and generations.
Sakamoto described Suga as "someone who seemed to think only about music, as if he had no other hobbies."
The late Sakamoto was a globally acclaimed musician from Japan who won Golden Globe and Grammy Awards, as well as the first-ever Academy Award for an Asian for the OST of the movie 'The Last Emperor.'
In addition to Suga, Moth's Lee Eun also expressed his condolences on Twitter, saying, "You were always in a distant place that I could never reach, and now you've gone even further away."
Sakamoto was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2014 and had been battling a recurrence since June 2020. The last official event where he met the public was 'Ryuichi Sakamoto: Playing the Piano 2022,' recorded at Tokyo NHK Studio on December 11 last year. According to his agency, the funeral will be held with only close relatives attending, following his will.
